On January 1, 2026, James M. Davis was sworn in as the 55th Sheriff of Hudson County, NJ. Sheriff Davis leads the second-largest law enforcement agency within Hudson County, compromised of over 300 personnel. The Hudson County Sheriff’s Department is tasked with safeguarding the county’s judicial proceedings, process service, writs & court orders, foreclosures, court executions criminal warrant arrests, Office of Emergency Management, Homeland Security, and the County 911 answering center. HCSO also provides patrol services on County roads and within County parks.
Sheriff Davis had previously served in the Bayonne Police Department for over 28 years as a Captain before retiring in 2014. During Sheriff Davis’ tenure in the Bayonne Police Department, he served numerous roles including assignments in the Hudson County Prosecutors Office Homicide Unit and he was the leader of the Special Investigations Unit. This unit was credited with numerous high-visibility arrests and prosecutions of numerous organized crime figures in Hudson County.
Upon Sheriff Davis’ retirement from the Bayonne Police Department, he began a very successful career as the Mayor of the City of Bayonne. Then Mayor Davis, made history as the first mayor to be elected to three consecutive terms with his entire slate of councilmen. His tenure as Mayor saw the renaissance of the city, which was on the brink of bankruptcy with a $25M structural deficit. Through innovative policies, Mayor Davis brought billions of dollars of investment into the city, and wiping out the deficit.
Sheriff Davis lives in Bayonne with wife Jamie and they have three sons.
